The Juvenile Justice Advisory Board (JJAB) is an established non-profit organization located in Los Alamos County. Created in 2004 through a joint effort of the Los Alamos School Board and the Los Alamos County Council, JJAB is recognized within Los Alamos County as a leader in prevention and intervention initiatives for youth. JJAB engages over 25 community board members including youth and representatives from education, legislative, law enforcement, judiciary, social and health services, media, recreation, and other community organizations. JJAB works with community members to research gaps in youth services and to develop and implement youth intervention and prevention programs to meet identified needs.

The Juvenile Justice Advisory Board (JJAB) was awarded a grant from the State’s Children’s and Family Department for FY10 for $83,520 . The JJAB also received $139,225 from the County and $10,000 from the School District to provide prevention type programs/activities as needed.

Purpose

 

  • Public awareness of youth issues
  • Development of strategies to assure a rapid response to youth in crisis
  • Data collection and analysis to determine needs and a risk profile
  • A resource assessment and identification of the service gaps in the community
  • A prioritization of services
  • Education for the community on the Graduated Sanctions Model
  • Coordination of agency/department policies to enhance the service continuum
  • Promotion of the use of science based service delivery models
  • To engage the community in solutions and to galvanize community resources for prevention and immediate intervention, thereby improving the lives of our youth, their chances for success, and building a healthier community
